This praying mantis, a Carolina Mantid (Stagmomantis carolina, South Carolina's state insect), is seen patrolling a lattice in Myrtle Beach. After the first click of the camera, the Mantid turned to stare directly into the lens, as if it were posing for a portrait. The Carolina Mantid, which grows as large as about four inches in length, is native to the southern United States.
