I was surprised to spot this adult Southern Toad (Bufo terrestris) sitting in bright 6 p.m. sunshine among pine needles in a sandy zone near Pelican Avenue in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina — surprised because adult Southern Toads usually don't come out until nearer dusk. About a hundred yards away is a long drainage channel containing many puddles, almost certainly the hatching-place of this toad.
(Compare with the American Toad, Bufo americanus, seen farther inland.)
