David L. Brittain
David Lanier Brittain, one of Myrtle Beach's best-known restaurateurs and hoteliers, died at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center on January 8, 2011. Mr. Brittain's life was characterized by compassion for both his community and family.
A native and lifelong resident of Myrtle Beach, David Brittain was born September 1, 1956, attended Myrtle Beach schools, and was graduated from Erskine College in 1977 with a degree in business.
Mr. Brittain started his career at the Sea Captain's House restaurant, and worked closely with his family in ways that are unique in today's business world. His career grew to include hotel and resort management. He was interested in promoting the Grand Strand as a great vacation destination and worked closely with the Grand Strand Chamber of Commerce throughout his career.
David Brittain was active in the First United Methodist Church, serving as chairman of the stewardship committee for many years. He was a firm believer in United Way as a way to help people in the local area. Mr. Brittain participated in the Boy Scouts, served on the boards of Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Grand Strand Chamber of Commerce, and the Dunes Club, and participated in many other civic activities.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Ann Thomas Brittain; his son Randford Reid Brittain; his daughter Anna Patterson Brittain; his parents Patricia and Clay Brittain; his brothers and their wives, Clay and Emma Ruth Brittain, and Matthew and Marie-Claire Brittain; and his sister and her husband, Mary and Clayton McNeel. Mr. Brittain is also survived by his nephews and nieces; JJ Thomas, Clare Cannon, Kindel Thomas, Randall Lok, Zeb Thomas III, Weatherly Thomas, Clay Brittain IV, Anne-Louise Brittain, Brittain McNeel, Ben Brittain, Christine Brittain, Morgan McNeel, Nicholas Brittain, and Kaki McNeel.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church, Myrtle Beach with Reverend Ken Timmerman officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor. A private family burial is being held prior to the service in Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Myrtle Beach at 901 N. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina 29577. McMillan-Small Funeral Home has the honor of serving the family.
