About the Authors

Kjell B. Sandved, a native of Norway, came to the United States in 1960 on a research project. During the course of his research, he found working at the Smithsonian Institution so enjoyable that he decided to stay and became an American citizen. This book reflects the full year that he spent looking through and photographing the Smithsonian's collection of ten million shells. Mr. Sandved has been acclaimed for his motion pictures about natural-history subjects, which he continues to produce for the Smithsonian.

Dr. R. Tucker Abbott, a graduate of both Harvard College and George Washington University, is Assistant Director and malacologist for the Delaware Museum of Natural History. His many other books about shells include American Seashells, Seashells of the World, and Seashells of North America.
