Ramsey White Brooks, Jr., age 78, of 204 Hurt Street, Chatham, Virginia, died Saturday, June 12, 2010, at his residence.
He was born on May 13, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, and was the son of the late Ramsey W. Brooks and the late Lillie Jennings Smith.
Mr. Brooks lived his entire life in Chatham. He was employed by Pittsylvania County Schools for over 35 years, most recently as bus shop foreman.
He was a member of Chatham Presbyterian Church for over 40 years, a charter member of the Chatham Rescue Squad, and a faithful member of the Chatham Volunteer Fire Department, receiving Fireman of the Year recognition in 2005.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Gibson Brooks of the residence; two daughters, Joan B. Giles and her husband James of Danville, and Barbara Brooks of Chatham; one son, Ronald W. Brooks and his wife, Trisha of Peoria, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, Chris Giles, Beth Craddock, Brittany Graham, Katie Brooks, Sarah Brooks, Sydney Strange, Molly Short, John Owings; four great-grandchildren, Brooke Craddock, Ethan Craddock, Michael Sutherland, and D. J. Sutherland.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one son, Ramsey W. Brooks, III.
Funeral services will be conducted at Chatham Presbyterian Church on Thursday, June 17, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Mikel D. Pugh officiating.
The family will receive friends at Scott Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 16, from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence of his daughter, Joan Giles, 104 Debbie Lane, Danville.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Chatham Volunteer Fire Department or the Chatham Rescue Squad.
