CHATHAM—Rebecca Edwards, age 84, of Chatham, Virginia, died Friday, May 21, 2010, at her Whittle Street residence. She was born on July 24, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, the daughter of John Calliehill Edwards and Rebecca Verna Giles Edwards. She was predeceased by her parents; three sisters (Annie Laura Bryant, Mary Ruth Edwards, and Rachel Buck; and one brother, Howard Percy Edwards.
She lived most of her life in Washington, D.C., but returned to Chatham in 1999 after retiring from the U.S. Department of State. She was a member of Chatham Baptist Church.
She is survived by two nieces: Ann Maxwell Bryant Tucker of Richmond, Virginia, and Sue Anne Buck Stice of Eagle River, Alaska; and one nephew, Dorryl Lee “Sonny” Buck of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; along with numerous great-grand-nieces and -nephews, and friends.
Graveside services will be conducted at Highland Burial Park on Monday, May 24, 2010 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Charles Warnock, III, officiating. The family will receive friends at Scott Funeral Home on Sunday, May 23, 2010 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Chatham Volunteer Rescue Squad.
