CHAPEL HILL, NCMichael Vincent O'Hare, 73, formerly of Arlington and Chatham, Virginia, died Sunday, March 15, 2009, at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill.

He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, and was the son of Margaret Mary and Owen J. O'Hare.

He was a sergeant in the Marine Corps, and a graduate of Catholic University.

He spent his career in Washington, D.C., as an administrator for the Overseas Development Council, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and the U.S. Naval Medical Research Center's Malaria Program.

He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Owen O'Hare, and is survived and mourned by his wife, Kathleen Hurt O'Hare; two children of the home, Owen and Margaret O'Hare; a daughter, Kate O'Hare Giovanello and husband, Nick Giovanello; three brothers, Edward O'Hare and wife, Glenna of Staten Island, New York; Robert O'Hare and wife, Doreen of Allentown, New Jersey; Jack O'Hare and wife, Eileen of Plainsboro, New Jersey; and one sister, Catherine O'Hare Simon of Charleston, South Carolina, many nieces and nephews, and many friends and colleagues.

Visitation will be from 7–9 p.m. on Wednesday evening, March 18, at Walker's Funeral Home on West Franklin Street. The funeral service will be held Thursday morning, March 19, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill. After the burial, a gathering of family and friends to celebrate Michael's life and mourn his passing will be held at the family home in Chapel Hill.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at UNC Hospital who cared so well and so compassionately for Michael, particularly the nurses in the Neurosurgical ICU, and Drs. Anand Germanwala and Tiffany Perry.
