About the Book

Ladies' Clothing in the 1830's consists of clothing descriptions and reminiscences of outfits; information on fabric, clothes, and accessories sold in the 1830's in stores from Mississippi to Illinois (and other states, including Virginia, Vermont, Georgia, South Carolina, and Massachusetts); and commentary on the shift of the style of clothing from Empire to early Victorian. The book is illustrated with black and white fashion illustrations and drawings from the period.

The book also includes a section on the physiological effects of corsets — including fainting, deformation of bones, and rounding of shoulders.
