Reflections in Sky and Sand?

By Henry H. Mitchell, January 11–12, 2009.

Ripples in Myrtle Beach's sand seemed worthy of recording photographically (see further examples in the article “Canyons in the Sand”). But then I was startled to see similar patterns in the sky the next evening.

The sand ripples formed as the tide retreated. The sky ripples formed as a cold front approached. I will leave it to hydrologists and meteorologists to explain why there is a mutual resemblance.
